Assembly Time:

The Wind Bag Kit can be assembled in less than 30 minutes for most first time builders and when finished it will travel 5 meters in less than one second.

• Experience working with wood glue and/or Cyanoacrylate glues (Super Glues).
• Able to glue two pieces of balsa wood together.
• Able to use needle nose pliers to cut and bend wire.

Thrust Propulsion

It is a basic law of physics as stated by Isaac Newton that, if you want to move forward, you have to throw something backwards. This law of motion is better known as Newton's Third Law of motion often called the law of action reaction. With a balloon powered racer, mass is thrown in one direction by the air pressure inside a balloon giving the vehicle a kick in the opposite direction, this force pushing the vehicle in the opposite direction is called a thrust. It is this thrust that pushes The Wind Bag in the opposite direction. The amount of thrust generated depends on how much air can be ejected by the balloon at any given moment, the more air that can be pushed out of the balloon at one time the bigger the kick or thrust created. How long that thrust last also depends on how much air is ejected and the amount of air in the balloon at the start. When you blow up a balloon, you increase the air pressure inside the balloon and this creates potential energy. This air pressure stretches out the rubber balloon material just like the stretching of a rubber band storing energy. It is the size of the nozzle opening attached to the balloon and the air pressure inside the balloon that controls the flow of air coming out of the balloon. By changing the size of the nozzle you can speed up or slow down your racer. The Wind Bag comes with a medium size nozzle that is designed to get this racers over a 5 meter distance in 1.5 seconds. The Wind Bag is capable of traveling 5 meters in under 1.5 seconds.

Stabilizers are used to hold the balloon in order to prevent the balloon from flopping around in order to control the air flow and the amount of thrust. The stabilizers help create a more uniform thrust for greater control of the acceleration and speed of the vehicle. The stabilizers also hold the balloon steady to maintaining better aerodynamics of the vehicle improving the overall performance of The Wind Bag as less energy is lost to friction.

Ultra-thin, low-inertia Dragster wheels and Axle System

One of the design secrets that make The Wind Bag Kit a guaranteed winner is it's ultra-low inertia Dragster Front Wheels and wire axle system. The Wind Bag Racer Kit uses our exclusive ultra-low inertia dragster wheels that allow The Wind Bag Racer to glide across the floor on a cushion of air, converting more of its stored energy into the overall speed of the racer itself. Because less energy is needed to overcome the inertia of the wheels, The Wind Bag Racer Kit will have a greater acceleration and top speed compared to simpler vehicles using wheels with much greater rotation inertia. Remember, it is all about energy! You start with a limited amount of stored potential energy because of the twisted rubber band. If wheels have a lot of rotational inertia, then more energy will be needed to rotate the wheels and less energy will go into the forward motion of the racer itself. Because of our ultra low inertia Dragster wheels, The Wind Bag Racer will have a much greater acceleration off the line and a much higher top speed for a recored finish.

Along with our ultra low inertia Dragster wheels, The Wind Bag Racer uses an extremely small, 1/32 inch diameter axle. This means that wheels spin with less resistance torque and less friction trying to slow the wheels down. Because less energy is lost to friction wheels spin with less effort and with less wasted energy compared to wheels that spin on larger diameter axle systems. The Wind Bag Racer will travel further and faster because there is less overall friction acting on the over all system, there is a greater conversion of potential energy into the overall kinetic energy of the racers itself.
