When it comes to building a top performance mousetrap powered vehicle gearing is probably the most important concept every builder will need to understand. Gearing is how you control both the speed and the pulling distance for any mousetrap powered car. Gearing in its simplest of terms is how far a vehicle will travel for the amount of string that can be pulled from its drive axle. The gearing of a mousetrap racer is determined by three components, the length of the mousetrap's snapper lever arm, the diameter of the drive axle, and/or the diameter of the drive wheels. By attaching a lever arm to a mousetrap's snapper arm you can control both the pulling force and the amount of string that can be wound around the drive axle. There is always a trade off, smaller lever arms increase the pulling force delivered to the drive axle so vehicles experience greater accelerations but decrease the overall pulling distance. Longer lever arm attached to the mousetrap's snapper arm decreases the pulling force but increase the amount of string that can be pull from a drive axle translating into greater travel distances. There are downsides to making a lever arms too long. Depending on the minimum pulling force needed to get a mousetrap car moving and keep it moving, a lever arm that is made too long will not meet the minimum pulling force requirements. Another down side to making a long lever is that, depending on the materials the lever arm is made from, as lever arms length is made longer and longer they tend to bend and/or flex under tension causing the mousetrap's spring to not wind the full 180 degrees so the system starts with less total energy.

Our 36" inch Super-Long Lever Arm is designed and guaranteed not to bend and/or flex when the mousetrap is fully wound so your vehicle will start with maximum potential energy. The lever arm length determines how many wraps of string can be wound around the drive axle. The more wraps of string that can be unwound from the drive axle means the greater the pulling distance. The total length of string that can be unwound from the drive axle is, at its maximum, twice the lever arm length. This means that the total amount of string that can be wound and unwound with our 36" inch Super-Long Lever Arm is a whopping 72" inches of string. Our Super-Long Lever Arm does not have to be used to its full length, it can be cut and trimmed to meet your needs.
