The Ultra-Light 11" Big Wheel illustrates one of the most basic design secret for achieving record-setting distances, gearing! When it comes to building a top performance mousetrap powered vehicle gearing is probably the most important concept every builder will need to understand. Gearing is how you control both the speed and the pulling distance for any mousetrap powered car. Gearing in its simplest of terms is how far a vehicle will travel for the amount of string that can be pulled from its drive axle. The gearing of a mousetrap racer is determined by three components, the length of the mousetrap's snapper lever arm, the diameter of the drive axle, and/or the diameter of the drive wheels. The larger the drive wheel the greater the travel distance for each turn of string removed from the drive axle. For every wrap of string that is pulled from the drive axle, The Ultra-Light Big Wheel will cover one full meter of liner distance. Our Ultra-Light 11" inch Big Wheel is made from a very light weight corrugated plastic so that it has very little rotational inertia and can be used with all long distance mousetrap, rubber band, and STEM vehicle challenges. The Ultimate Big Wheel can easily be cut and trimmed to decrease mass and the rotational even more for even greater speed and travel distance as needed. Rotational Inertia

Rotational inertia is the resistance an object has to changes in it's state of rotation. For an object that is not rotating we commonly talk about its inertia or its mass; the more mass an object has, the more resistance the object will have to any change in it's state of motion. With rotational inertia we still talk about an objects mass but we also include the location of it's mass with respect to it's point of rotation. The greater the distance between the average mass of a rotating object and it's point of rotation means the greater the rotational inertia of the object (large wheels have more rotational inertia then smaller wheels of same mass). The more rotational inertia an object has the more torque that will be required to change the objects state of rotation. A large amount of rotational inertia can have an advantage once an object is rotating because it will be harder to stop rotating.But, also having a wheel with a lot of rotational inertia can be a big disadvantage as it takes more energy to get the wheel turning in the first place.


Rotational Inertia and Wheels

How does rotational inertia play into the design of a good long distance-traveling mousetrap car? When building a mousetrap car for distance the goal is to convert as much of the mouse trap's starting energy into displace of the vehicle over the greatest linear distance. The starting potential energy of the mousetrap will be needed to overcome the force of friction acting against the vehicle's travel. A mousetrap car cannot move anywhere until the potential energy of the mouse trap's spring puts energy into the wheels and changes their state of rotation from rest into motion; the more rotational inertia a vehicle has the more energy that will be consumed just to get the wheels turning. Use wheels that have as little rotational inertia as possible. For record setting results, cut and remove as much mass from a wheel in order to decrease the rotational inertia. Our Ultra-Light 11" inch Big Wheel comes wihtout spokes but can easily be cut with a hobby knife as needed for better performance.
