The biggest challenge with all high-speed and high torque contests is wheel traction. If wheels do not have enough traction, your racer will spin its wheels at the start wasting precious energy. The Speed-Trap Racer comes with two ultra sticky, low inertia foam wheels that are made from a very sticky lightweight urethane that is designed to grab any floor surface creating maximum traction while generating rocket accelerations. Assembly Time:

The Speed-Trap Racer Kit can be assembled in less than 30 minutes for most first time builders and when finished it will travel 5 meters in 1.2 seconds.

Record Setting Design

The Speed-Trap Racer is geared with a 6" inch lever arm to generate a tremendous amount of pulling force while maximizing the transfer of potential energy into energy of motion over a 5 meter distance. The Speed-Trap Racer is an easy-to-build top performing mousetrap racer that is perfect for all high torque and top speed contests. The Speed-Trap Racer is geared to constantly gain velocity from the start line to the finish line so there is no slowing down before it crosses the finish line. The Speed-Trap Racer will reach its maximum velocity at 4.5 meters from the start line, 0.5 meters before it crosses the finish line.

High Torque Gearing

When it comes to building a top performance mousetrap powered vehicle gearing is probably the most important concept every builder will need to understand. Gearing is how you control the pulling force, acceleration, and the pulling distance of a mousetrap vehicle.

There are three components that determine a mousetrap vehicles gearing, the length of the mousetrap's snapper lever arm, the diameter of the drive axle, and the diameter of the drive wheels. By attaching a lever arm to a mousetrap's snapper arm you can control both the pulling force and the amount of string that can be wound around the drive axle. The amount of torque delivered by the mousetrap's spring does not change but you can change the amount of pulling force delivered to the drive axle by changing the length of the mousetrap's lever arm. A longer lever arm decreases the pulling force but extends that pulling force over a greater distance. A shorter lever arms will increase the pulling force but only over a shorter distance compared to longer lever arms.

When you need greater acceleration and/or more torque to the drive wheels, you will want to decrease the length of the lever arm attached to the mousetrap's snapper, this will also increase the torque delivered to the drive wheels increasing the acceleration and speed of the vehicle. The Speed Trap Racer uses a shorter lever arm that is geared to accelerate your racer over a very short distance so your vehicle will be at it top speed in less than a second.

The Speed-Trap Racer Kit uses a shorter 6" inch lever arm for a maximum of 12" inches of string that can be wound around the drive axle. Based on the overall gearing, the pulling distance for The Speed-Trap Racer Kit is 4.6 meters (15 feet).

Ultra-Sticky Foam Wheels

Our Ultra-Sticky Foam Wheels wheels are manufactured specifically for Doc Fizzix Products and are the exact same wheels that were used on Doc Fizzix's world record setting mousetrap racer that traveled 5 meters in 1.2 seconds. By far, the biggest secret to Doc Fizzix world record setting Speed-Trap racer was the use of these ultra sticky foam wheels that were essential in keeping his Speed-Trap Racer from spinning out at the start line by providing maximum traction to the floor surface. Ultra sticky foam wheels are 2 inches in diameter and machined to fit a 5/32 inch axle

Dragster Front Wheels

Just another design secrets that makes The Speed-Trap Racer Kit a guaranteed winner is it's ultra-low inertia Dragster Front Wheels and wire axle system. The Speed-Trap Racer Kit uses our exclusive ultra-low inertia dragster front wheels that allow The Speed-Trap Racer to glide across the floor on a cushion of air, converting more of its stored energy into the overall speed of the racer itself. Because less energy is needed to overcome the inertia of the wheels, The Speed-Trap Racer will have a greater acceleration and top speed compared to simpler vehicles using wheels with much greater rotation inertia. Remember, it is all about energy! You start with a limited amount of stored potential energy because of the wound-up mousetrap's spring. If wheels have a lot of rotational inertia, then more energy will be needed to rotate the wheels and less energy will go into the forward motion of the racer itself. Because of our ultra low inertia Dragster wheels, The Speed-Trap Racer will have a much greater acceleration off the line and a much higher top speed for a recored finish.

Along with our ultra low inertia Dragster wheels, The Speed-Trap Racer uses an extremely small, 1/32 inch diameter axle. This means that wheels spin with less resistance torque and less friction trying to slow the wheels down. Because less energy is lost to friction wheels spin with less effort and with less wasted energy compared to wheels that spin on larger diameter axle systems. The Speed-Trap Racer will travel further and faster because there is less overall friction acting on the over all system, there is a greater conversion of potential energy into the overall kinetic energy of the racers itself.

Easy-wind, snag-free propulsion system

As with all our top mousetrap racer kits, The Speed-Trap Racer includes our "easy-wind" and "snag-free" string release system that will not tangle and/or snag on release for increased performance, a technique developed exclusively by Doc Fizzix for mousetrap and rubber band powered racers. Our snag-free propulsion system is designed to release from the drive axle once the pulling force is complete in order to maximize the coasting distance.

Ultra thin, low-inertia wheel and Axle System

Our low-inertia wheel and axle system includes our lightweight, 3/16" inch diameter brass tubing axles that spin with less friction than wooden dowels for an increase in both the speed and the travel distance of your vehicle. Lightweight brass-tubing axles will not warp like wooded dowels and have a lot less mass than steel axles used in many of our competitors kits so your mousetrap vehicles will travel smoother, with less wobble, and less wasted energy for an increase in both speed and travel distance.
