Friction is a mousetrap car's number one enemy. Friction steals energy from all moving objects and eventually brings them to rest. The number one objective when building a recored setting long-distance traveling mousetrap powered vehicle and/or speed-trap racer is to reduce the rolling friction as much as possible in order to increase the overall coasting distance and top speed of your vehicle. The worst friction point on any vehicle are always where the spinning axle is attached to the frame. Because nothing rolls like a ball, micro ball bearings are designed to replace a bushing systems with a more efficient ball-bearing system that will reduce the overall total rolling friction by as much as 50-80% in most situations. Micro-ball bearings are mounted into a vehicles frame where they hold the axle and allow that axle to spin freely on a surface of tinny little balls reducing the total rolling friction to near zero, your vehicle will travel further and faster. Micro ball bearings are the ultimate friction reduction option available and will produce the most dramatic increase in performance. Micro ball bearings intended only for those individuals who want to set a new school record. Micro ball bearings do require a bit more work to setup correctly compared to a bushing systems but the rewards are well worth the extra work.

Our micro-bearings have an outer diameter of 3/8" inch and will hold a 3/16" inch diameter axle. In some cases, axles may need to be sanded in order to fit the bearing since bearings are manufactured to a much higher tolerance than most hobby brass tubing. Ball bearings can be used with almost all Doc Fizzix kits and when purchased with any one of our pre-drilled kits we will resize the holes upon request to accommodate the bearings.

Micro ball bearings are used to replaces a bushing in order to reduce the total rolling friction by as much as 50-80%. This means that your mousetrap vehicle will travel up to 50-80% further than the rest of the competition. Micro bearings take a little more work to setup and get working properly so they are intended only for those individuals who want to set a new school record. This is a more advanced kit and is recommended for those that have some building experience.

Performance Tip

Micro-ball Bearings come pre-packed with grease and are intended for us on high speed applications. For slow moving, lightweight mousetrap cars and rubber band powered racers, this grease can cause a small amount of resistance and should be removed by soaking bearings in WD-40. Soak bearings in a solution of WD-40, spin on a a pencil tip, and repeat. The more times you repeat this process the more grease you will remove form the bearings so they will spin with even less resistance.
