One of the secrets to building a great long-distance travelers is gearing. In this video a mousetrap car uses large drive wheels so that for each wrap of string that is pulled from the drive axle the mousetrap vehicle travels the greatest possible linear distance. Most long distance travelers will be designed to maximize the pulling distance by using large drive wheels and/or a longer lever arm, this also causes the vehicles to be very slow moving.
