Product Description

Manufactured exclusively by Doc Fizzix, our Ultra-thin, low inertia, DVD layer wheels that are the same diameter as a normal CD/DVD but only half the thickness. Because our wheels are only half the thickness compared to a normal CD/DVD, they have only half the rotational inertia. Half the rotational inertia means your vehicle will have a greater acceleration off the line, a greater top speed, and a greater travel distance compared to a similar mousetrap/rubber band powered racer that is using normal thickness CDs/DVDs. Our Ultra-thin, Low Inertia Wheels have been proven to increase a vehicles travel distance from 5-10 meters compared to the same vehicle using normal thickness CD/DVD wheels. Our Ultra-thin, low inertia DVD layer wheels are designed to be used on extreme distance traveling mousetrap and rubber band powered vehicles. Give your mousetrap, rubber band, balloon, and/or STEM vehicle project the winning edge with our exclusive Ultra-thin, low inertia, DVD layer wheels. Do not forget to also order our shock absorbing CD/DVD wheel inserts that fit perfectly inside any standard sized CD/DVD so it can then be fitted to a 3/16" inch diameter axle.

Performance Tip:

For an increase in travel distance, DO NOT add rubber bands to the outside of your wheels! Record setting, long distance travelers will be slower moving vehicles that conserve energy and should not need large amounts of traction at the start line. If you are building a long distance racer and your vehicle's wheels are spinning out at the start line, then you will need to decrease the pulling force and/or torque. By adding rubber bands to wheels you will increase the rotation inertia and decreases the overall travel distance of your vehicle. Increased traction is really only needed for quick accelerating, top speed racers, and stopping vehicles. Our Ultra-thin, low-inertia DVD layers are designed to be used without modification and guaranteed to increase the over all travel distance from as much as 5-10 meters.

Ultra Thin, Low Inertia DVD Layers

Our exclusive ultra-thin, low inertia, DVD layer wheels are the same diameter as a normal CD/DVD but only half the thickness. Because our wheels are only half the thickness compared to a normal CD/DVD, they have only half the rotational inertia. Half the rotational inertia means your vehicle will have a greater acceleration off the line and a much greater travel distance compared to a similar mousetrap/rubber band powered racer that is using normal thickness CDs/DVDs. Our Ultra-thin, Low Inertia Wheels have been proven to increase the travel distance from 5-10 meters compared to the same vehicle using normal thickness CD/DVD wheels.

Rotational Inertia

Rotational inertia effect both the travel distance and the acceleration of a mousetrap, rubber band, and balloon powered racer. Rotational inertia is the resistance an object has to changes in it's state of rotation. For an object that is not rotating we commonly talk about the object's inertia or it's mass; the more mass an object has the more resistance the object has to any change in it's state of motion. With rotational inertia we still talk about an objects mass but we include the location of it's mass with respect to the point of rotation. The greater the distance between the average mass of a rotating object from it's point of rotation the greater the rotational inertia of the object. The more the rotational inertia an object has the greater the torque that will be required to change the objects state of rotation. A large amount of rotational inertia can have an advantage once an object is rotating because it will be harder to stop that object from rotating. Having a wheel with a lot of rotational inertia can be a big disadvantage when building both long distance travelers and top speed racers. Wheels with large amounts of rotation inertia require larger torques and consume more energy to accelerate. It is alway a good idea to carefully select wheels based on the type of challenge you are competing in and wheels the have as little rotation inertia as possible. Distance travelers will tend to have larger wheels than vehicles designed for top speed that requirer greater accelerations off the start line.

Rotational Inertia and Wheels

How does rotational inertia play into the design of a good long distance-traveling mousetrap car? When building a mousetrap car for distance the goal is to convert as much of the mouse trap's starting energy into displace of the vehicle over the greatest linear distance. The starting potential energy of the mousetrap will be needed to overcome the force of friction acting against the vehicle's travel. A mousetrap car cannot move anywhere until the potential energy of the mouse trap's spring puts energy into the wheels and changes their state of rotation from rest into motion; the more rotational inertia a vehicle has the more energy that will be consumed just to get the wheels turning. Use wheels that have as little rotational inertia as possible. For record setting results, cut and remove as much mass from a wheel in order to decrease the rotational inertia. Our Ultra-thin, low inertia, DVD layer wheels comes wihtout spokes but can easily be cut with a hobby knife as needed for better performance.
